Certification Questions

1. Is PM Tech certification required by the EPA?

No. PM Tech certification is an optional certification created by Mainstream to increase industry awareness of best-practice service techniques.

2. What are the three levels of PM Tech certification?

Below are the three levels of PM Tech certification along with the requirements for each. Every technician is apprentice by default (unless you have a higher IAQ certification level you have already provided proof for):

  • Apprentice PM Tech Certification
    • Has EPA Section 608 certification from Mainstream or any other EPA-approved testing organization. You must fax or mail your certification to Mainstream if not Mainstream certified.
    • Successfully completes the PM Tech exam with a score of 84% or better.
  • Journeyman PM Tech Certification
    • Has all the requirements of the Apprentice PM Tech.
    • Has at least 5 years of verifiable experience in the HVAC/R trades. Fax or mail documentation to substantiate this required experience to Mainstream.
  • Master PM Tech Certification
    • Has all the requirements of the Apprentice PM Tech.
    • At least 10 years of verifiable experience in the HVAC/R trades. Fax or mail documentation to substantiate this required experience to Mainstream.
